DPF Cleaning: What to Expect & Cost

A clogged diesel particulate filter (DPF) can put your truck in limp mode, trigger endless regenerations, or force an expensive replacement. Professional cleaning is often the middle path—cheaper than a new filter when the DPF isn't cracked or melted.

What A DPF Does

The DPF traps soot from diesel combustion. Periodic regenerations burn that soot off. When soot or ash builds up faster than the system can clear it—short trips, failed sensors, bad fueling—you get warnings, incomplete regens, and power cuts.

When Cleaning Makes Sense

  • Frequent or failed regenerations
  • High DPF differential pressure readings
  • Derates with soot-related codes
  • Shop confirms the filter substrate is intact

Cleaning is less likely to help if the DPF is physically damaged, melted, or oil-contaminated from a failing turbo.

What To Expect At The Shop

  1. Scan for codes and check live data (soot load, sensors, regen history).
  2. Diagnose root causes (injectors, turbo oil leak, EGR, sensors) so the DPF doesn't clog again immediately.
  3. Perform a forced regen, on-vehicle clean, or off-vehicle professional cleaning depending on severity.
  4. Road-test and confirm pressures return to a healthy range.

Typical Costs (U.S. Ballparks)

  • Forced regeneration / basic service: Often $150–$400
  • Professional DPF cleaning: Roughly $400–$1,500+
  • DPF replacement: Frequently $2,000–$5,000+ installed

Ask what's included: diagnosis, cleaning method, sensors, and labor.

How To Reduce DPF Problems

  • Mix in occasional highway runs so passive/active regens can finish
  • Fix boost leaks and injector issues early
  • Use quality diesel and the correct engine oil (wrong oil can ash-load a DPF)
  • Don't ignore DEF or exhaust warnings

Find diesel shops that service DPFs.
